Researching Volcanic Winter
I often get asked, could the story of Volcanic Winter really happen? Well, yes. And, no.
My research involved delving into many issues about climate change, the impact of global warming and the effect of rapid global cooling. I needed to learn about volcanoes and whether a Mt Taupo event could occur in modern times. It required hours of library and internet research and meeting with scholars. To be able to describe scenes in Washington DC required me to spend many days in the city taking tours, visiting places that could be settings for scenes, meeting people from all walks of life, and getting a feel for life on the streets and in the halls of power. I found myself becoming an unlikely expert on some parts of the US Constitution.
So, could it really happen? Yes, massive volcanic eruptions could plunge the earth into rapid global cooling. Whether man could make that happen? I’ll leave that for the reader to decide.
